Stranger Things fans clash over Billy’s death as they call out terrifying Mind Flayer for double standards – The Sun

STRANGER Things isn’t afraid to kill off some of its most popular characters.

The Netflix sci-fi hit ended season 3 with Jim Hopper (David Harbour) missing after a catastrophic explosion, and Billy Hargrove (Darce Montgomery) murdered by the Mind Flayer.

Both characters were firm fan favourites and died in moments of heroism as they strove to protect Hawkins from the Upside Down.

Billy was slaughtered just moments after redeeming himself by saving Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) from certain death, following a string of murders under the influence of the Mind Flayer.

He had carried out the beast’s bidding in the early part of the series, providing a steady stream of human hosts to be ingested.

However, after Eleven managed to trigger some of his childhood memories with his mother he rediscovered his humanity, and grabbed the monster by its jaw, managing to stall its attack.

Fans took to Reddit to discuss the moment, with some claiming that Billie managing to go toe-to-toe such a fearsome beast was unrealistic.

“Mindflayer: is a terrifying inter dimensional monster with insane power, and is capable of making an army of slave.

“Also the Mindflayer: Almost loses a one-on-one fight with Billy,” one user quipped.

While the comment received upvotes and messages of agreement, there were others who pointed out that Billy had the element of surprise on his side.

“Not sure what you mean? It killed Billy at the end, the only reason it didn’t kill him right away is because it didn’t expect him to be free from his possession,” a dissenter retorted.

“It could be because it was surprised that after everything, Billy would still defy it,” they elaborated.

They noted that the circumstances of his original showdown with the Mind Flayer were completely different, more along the lines of an ambush.

“If you’re referring to the beginning when he’s lead into the Mill, he was dragged and it was incredibly dark out, Billy only put up a fight to resist being dragged down the stairs but he failed that within 6 seconds,” they concluded.

Other pointed out that the only characters who managed to do some damage to the Mind Flayer were the likes of Eleven, owing to her telekinetic powers, as well as Nancy Wheeler (Natalie Dyer) and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) in a co-ordinated attack.

The furore comes after Dustin Henderson actor Gaten Matarazzo addressed fan theories that his girlfriend Suzie could be an undercover Russian spy.

He also suggested that Will Byers would be at the centre of a significant Upside Down twist.

Stranger Things seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix now.
