'Power Book IV: Force': What Does the Spider Mean?

February 14, 2022

Tommy Egan’s spinoff is here in full force. Set after Ghost’s death in Power, Power Book IV: Force follows the hot-tempered gangster as he rebuilds his business from the ground up. It stands out in its own right, with a new setting, characters, and tone. But there are still plenty of nods and callbacks to the original series.

Those who watched “King of the Goddamn Hill,” the second episode of Power Book IV: Force, might have walked away wondering about the importance of that spider symbol. There’s clearly some significance there, but what does it mean exactly?

[Warning: This article contains spoilers for Power Book IV: Force Season 1 Episode 2.]

Tommy Egan ran into a familiar face in the episode

Early on in Power Book IV: Force Episode 2, Tommy (Joseph Sikora) was ambushed by a woman with a large scar on her face. She was revealed to be Liliana (Audrey Esparza), a Power character who worked with Tommy and Ghost (Omari Hardwick). Fans will recall that she got the scar in a fight with Pink Sneakers. Tommy thought it made her stand out too much and tried to kill her. But instead, Ghost promoted her because of her loyalty.

Believing Ghost had killed her, Tommy was shocked to run into her in Force. The two began fighting but were interrupted when a police car drove past. Later, Tommy broke into Liliana’s house, intending to kill her when something caught his attention. Underneath the floorboard was a bag of drugs containing a card with a spider painted across it.

What’s the meaning of the ‘Power Book IV: Force’ spider?

The item calls to mind the La Araña card from Power, which, as the Power Twitter page notes, “means trouble.” As TVLine reports, the Jimenez Cartel would leave them for people they wanted dead, like Tommy and Kanan Stark (50 Cent). The one in Liliana’s apartment doesn’t look exactly like it, but there are enough similarities that it seems possible that it’s a match.

Does that mean Liliana is working with the Jimenez cartel? Only time will tell, but fans writing on Reddit were at least certain that it’s the same card.

“Damn the Jimenez set up shop in chiraq,” one fan wrote.

“thats crazy how she work for Jimenez now, wonder whos left since alicia and diego got killed, tommy was right ghost shoulda killed her earlier🤣,” said another.

If true, it’ll be interesting to see if any other original characters show up. Sikora has tried hard to avoid spoiling the show for fans, but he has hinted at cameos and crossovers in the past.
