Power Book II: Ghost: A look at the dramatic finale

Starz series Power Book II: Ghost will be making a comeback after the drama got the green light from the American television network. The first outing was a huge hit with fans all over the world after launching in September 2020. Season two hasn’t got a release date as yet but will pick up in the shocking aftermath of the first series.

Why did Justin McManus leave Power Book 2 as Jabari Reynolds?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from the Power Book II: Ghost season 1 finale

Ghost introduced Power audiences to a new and exciting world as Tariq St Patrick (played by Michael Rainey Jr) embarked in college life in order to unlock his inheritance.

His father James “Ghost” St Patrick (Omari Hardwick) put down some tough stipulations in his will, meaning Tariq needed to attend college and get a degree to earn his slice of the family fortune.

The show saw Tariq’s fellow Stansfield College students brought into the story, along with his teachers including Professor Jabari Reynolds (Justin Marcel McManus).

Sadly, it was curtains for Jabari in the Ghost season one finale after he was killed by Tariq who took him out to stop him revealing all about his drug dealing on campus and links to the Tajadas.

Tariq proved his loyalty to the Tejadas after he put a stop to Jabari’s plans to write a book exposing the teen’s misdeeds.

The college student didn’t hesitate in killing Jabari as the college professor pleaded for his life.

Tariq knew full well if he didn’t silence Jabari it would be his neck on the line.

From the looks of it, Jabari’s death was simply part of the story rather than actor McManus wanting to leave – which seems to be the case a lot in Power as many characters have bitten the bullet over the years.

Actor McManus also posted about his departure on Instagram, telling his 42,000 followers: “Man this is a bitter sweet moment!! I’m beyond grateful for @courtneyakemp and @50cent @bartwenrich150 @shanasteinprod @markcanton and all the producers of @ghoststarz for giving me a job!

“Best crew and set I have worked on it’s like a family I will def miss . And all you Crazy Power fans listen I don’t know who y’all are going to hate on now that Jabari is gonelol but I love yalll still

“And much love to all my cast mates I can’t wait to see what y’all bring next season .. @melanieliburd @toyofficial @therealmaryjblige @thugginn @daniel_lee_bellomy @lovelladamsgray @giannivpaolo @michaelraineyjr @woody_thegreat @methodmanofficial @quincytylerbernstine @shane_m_johnson @thealixlapri #powerghost #powerbook2 #ghostsneverdie.”

Jabari’s death opens up the door to more possibilities in season two with Tariq and the Tejadas potentially having to cover up the murder.

The death also adds another layer of danger for Tariq, who will again be falling under suspicion for murder but this time for Jabari rather than his father.

Additionally, this death could be held over Tariq’s head by the Tejadas and used for blackmail purposes against him but fans will have to see.

Power creator Courtney Kemp has spoken about what fans can expect in season two, teasing more ethical dilemmas and moral conflicts in line with Tariq’s studies.

Kemp said: “So, next year we will be exploring ethics and I will leave it at that.”

She went on to say how season two would be a “coming-of-age” story as Tariq had to deal with things by himself.

His mother Tasha St Patrick (Naturi Naughton) went into witness protection after accusing Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora) of pulling the trigger on Ghost.

Tariq will no longer have Tasha around for advice and help, leaving him out in the wilderness having just turned 18 at the end of the first run.

Kemp added: “Part of the journey of season two is absolutely going through and making decisions without the benefit of someone to call.”

Season two may see a growth in Tariq as he’s forced to fend for himself with enemies all around him.

She described Tasha as being Tariq’s “training wheels” and helped the character to strike out on his own which fans will see going forward.

Kemp teased TV Line, saying: “What I will just preview a little bit is that Tariq has done this thing, he’s made a decision to save her life, but he will have no control over where she is or what she’s doing.

“So, when we get to the beginning of season two, there’s definitely a feeling from Tariq of, ‘I would like to know where my mother is,’ and I think I’ll leave it with that.”

Although she wouldn’t be drawn on whether Naughton would be back as Tasha, she suggested there was always the potential for a return as Tasha wasn’t dead.
