Ozark theories: Jonah shot and killed key character in season 3 finale – here’s who

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Ozark season 3.

Jonah Byrde (played by Skylar Gaertner) had a rather tough time of things in the latest series of Ozark on Netflix. The teenager found himself living in constant fear as a result of his parents, Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney), and their illegal doings as well as having to say goodbye to his uncle Ben Davis (Tom Pelphrey) at the hands of Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer) and hitman Nelson (Nelson Bonilla).

Not only that but Jonah was also left to deal with teenage tearaway Tommy (Tyler Chase) as he tried to put his sister Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Helen’s daughter Erin (Madison Thompson) down the wrong path.

By the time the season three finale rolled around, it appeared the pressure all got too much for Jonah.

Armed with a rifle, Jonah made his way to Helen’s home and held her at gunpoint.

Jonah pinned the death of Ben on the cartel’s lawyer and was desperate for revenge – but she was able to convince the young Byrde the blame lied with his mother.

Understandably outraged, Jonah headed home to an empty house as his parents were on their way to Mexico to meet cartel leader Omar Navarro (Felix Solis).

Upon his arrival, Jonah found his uncle’s ashes and emotions soon boiled over.

He grabbed the rifle, turned, and fired at one of the home’s windows.

This was the last Netflix subscribers saw of Jonah in season three and while many have interpreted this as a random act of rage, one fan theory has suggested Jonah may have been taking aim at one of the show’s biggest characters.

Taking to Reddit, user KronosQueen suggests Jonah took his frustrations out on Helen’s daughter Erin.

They said: “I think Jonah shot Erin. Her Mom was out of town and she probably told her to check in with the Byrde kids.

“Ties up loose story ends nicely. Who do you think he shot?”

The theory gained plenty of support, with one user replying: “Honestly that would be epic.”

It wouldn’t be the strangest thing to ever happen on Ozark and there is some evidence to support the theory.

After all, Jonah was just moments away from shooting Helen and arguably would’ve done so if he’d seen Ben’s ashes before.

Now that he’s found his uncle’s remains, if he were to turn around and see someone held so dear to Helen, would he be rational enough to stop himself?

  • Power theories: Fans predict odd Ozark crossover as they spot clue

Erin was forced to hang out with the Byrde children to try and blend in and Jonah would often attempt to unsuccessfully flirt with her.

However, it’s clear she only had eyes for Tommy, despite him being a clear bad influence.

If he held some sort of resentment or jealousy because of this, could it have played a factor?

Fans will have to wait until season four to find out who, if anybody, Jonah shot.

Ozark is available to stream on Netflix now.
