Outlander: Is Outlander cutting down on its sex scenes? Is there less sex in the show?

Season five of Outlander is going to be hitting screens in early 2020 with episodes being filmed at the moment. The new series will combine material from Diana Gabaldon’s novels The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes. Previous seasons served as adaptations of a single book but this will be the first time that two novels have been used for inspiration.

Is Outlander cutting down on its sex scenes?

The Starz show has never shied away from sex scenes with the first season featuring quite a number of moments involving Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and his wife Claire (Caitriona Balfe).

Season one also saw Claire’s sexual relationship with her first husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) play out, demonstrating the strong bond between the couple.

The sex scenes were also used to show Claire’s own sexuality and femininity as well as her choice to marry Jamie in the first place after they’re forced to wed.

Diana Gabaldon has previously spoken about the more steamy scenes, telling Express.co.uk in 2016: “It’s very important for multiple reasons, for one thing, theirs is a forced marriage.

“They were never intending to marry each other. She wasn’t intending to marry him. He married her mainly because he wanted to sleep with her, to protect her also.

“But the sexual attraction between them is very strong and is the glue that holds them through some very difficult times.”

While season one was very saucy, the follow-up toned things down but there was still a lot of moments between the lovers.

The shift came in season three when Jamie and Claire were forced apart for 20 years after she returned to the future and raised their child Brianna (Sophie Skelton) with her now estranged husband Frank.

They had a loveless marriage and their distance came from their lack of emotional and physical intimacy.

Even when Claire did return to the past and reunited with her soul mate Jamie, their relationship changed.

While the sexual attraction remained, there were fewer sex scenes with the action and drama taking precedence.

Season four, which was the most recent run, was even less of a steamy affair with Outlander’s executive producer Marl Davies admitting that sex scenes were cut in favour of the expansive plot.

Speaking to Glamour earlier this year, Davies explained: “I think every season is different.

“This season [season four] we were introducing more characters, and there was a lot of story to get in.”

She continued: “We’ve always talked about the sex scenes, we love them too, but they have to be organic to the story.

“I do anticipate a return, hopefully, to that next season a little more.

“Every season has its different storylines and where we’re going.”

She added: “It can’t always re-create the first season, which was very special, but it just has to be within the story and feel like it’s organic.”

So, it does look like the sex has taken more of a backseat as the show has gone on over the years.

There’s no word about titillating scenes in season five but it sounds like the show is already cramming in lots of drama which could again mean the sex gets cut.

Although the show may have had to sacrifice the sex, fans can read more about Jamie and Claire’s steamy liaisons in Gabaldon’s books in which there’s more time to explore the couple’s relationship.
