Neighbours and Home and Away star cleared of indecent assaults

December 15, 2020

Former Neighbours and Home and Away actor Craig McLachlan has been cleared of all charges after facing trial over indecent assault and common assault.

He was accused of committing the assaults against his colleagues on stage back on 2019 during a run of The Rocky Horror Picture Show but Magistrate Belinda Wallington dismissed all 13 charges.

The case involved four complaints and Wallington said they ‘were brave and honest witnesses’, but their testimonies ‘did not prove McLachlan’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.’

Allegations included McLachlan tickling a woman’s thigh from behind while onstage during a live performance.

Melbourne Magistrates Court was told McLachlan played tricks on the cast to make them laugh. Wallington said the actor seemed to have thought touching his co-star this way was funny.

But she could not exclude the possibility that an ‘egotistical self-entitled sense of humour led the accused to genuinely think that (the woman) was consenting to his actions’.

McLachlan was also accused of tracing his finger around the outline of a co-star’s vagina while they performed a bedroom scene, which was not an action in the script.

It was concluded in court that McLachlan stopped touching the woman when he became aware she did not consent.

In a statement, McLachlan said: ‘We aren’t going to speak in any detail today. We will certainly do so in the immediate new year. As you can imagine, we have a lot to say.’

He was not present in court for the decision.
