Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) finally bowed out last week after almost two decades heading up CBS’s long-running crime series. A 20th instalment of NCIS has yet to be confirmed, but the show’s latest promo on Instagram provoked strong reactions from fans who claimed they won’t be tuning in now the ex-agent has departed the series.

Series lead Harmon was given his final swan song as Gibbs in last Monday’s episode, Great Wide Open.

After one more mission with Agent Tim McGee (Sean Murray), Gibbs decided he was too old to continue being an agent and stayed put in Alaska.

McGee, Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Knight (Katrina Law) returned for another case on Monday night, one of the first episodes of the show to not feature Gibbs front and centre.

Their latest case, Face the Strange, was promoted with a first-look image by the show’s official Instagram account.

Unfortunately, many fans were still reeling from Gibbs’ sudden exit last week and flocked to the comments to vent their grievances with the series.

IG user tran.khuong1981 commented: “NCIS is Mark Harmon’s show and it won’t be the same without him.”

And inkaa1966 put it simply, adding: “No Gibbs no NCIS.”

While i_am_mr._incredible wrote: “Please tell me this new FBI agent isn’t going to be a permanent fixture in the show. I’ll have to stop watching.”

It seems newcomer FBI Agent Alden Park (Gary Cole) could become a permanent fixture to fill the show’s Gibbs-shaped hole.

Many viewers thought the Emmy-nominated TV and film star was a worthy successor to the long-standing head agent.

Romaniak406 insisted: “Gary Cole is a FABULOUS To lead the team.

“Seems I am in the minority,” they added in another comment. “Gary Cole is absolutely the best choice to replace Gibbs.”

Sadly, not everyone was quite so convinced the show’s potential replacement was up to scratch.

User 1soproni fumed: “What the hell is happening? SWAT without Hondo? NCIS without Gibbs? What’s next?”

Alanenmaggie added: “I just can’t watch it without Gibbs!”

And finally, joelong579 said: “No the show is dead without Gibbs.”

Showrunner Steven D. Binder has yet to confirm whether Park will be made a permanent addition to the team going forward.

With Gibbs stepping down, there’s a strong chance NCIS won’t be returning for its milestone 20th season when the current run wraps up next spring.

Thankfully, long-running spin-offs NCIS: Los Angeles and the fresh-faced NCIS: Hawaii are still going strong so the franchise is set to continue for years to come.

NCIS season 19 continues Mondays on CBS.
