Officials have confirmed at least 36 people have died after huge flames continue to destroy large parts of a town in Maui called Lahaina.

Fanned by 85mph winds from a faraway hurricane, multiple neighbourhoods have been burnt to the ground and the western side of the island has nearly been cut off.

The severed gusts have prevented helicopters from aiding efforts to contain the fire, according to Major General Kenneth S. Hara, the Adjutant General for the State of Hawaii.
