Matthew Perry's' slurred speech in Friends reunion promo 'due to emergency dental work which left him unwell & in pain'May 27, 2021
MATTHEW Perry's "slurred" speech in the Friends reunion promo video was due to emergency dental procedure not a drugs relapse, a source has claimed.
Matthew, 51, sat down with the cast of Friends for a "three question" interview with PEOPLE last week about the upcoming HBO Max special.
Fans noticed, however, that the Canadian actor seemed to slur his words and even nod off at one point during the clip.
Many fans also expressed their concern over Matthew, who has struggled with addiction since his time on the award-winning show.
One wrote: "This felt so good seeing but also broke my heart seeing Matthew Perry like this."
Now a source has told The Sun that Matthew had actually undergone an emergency dental procedure which left him in pain – and he has not relapsed.
A source said: "Matthew turned up to the reunion and members of his team said that he had an emergency tooth procedure that day.
"That was said to impact his wellbeing and also how he was feeling.
"He had been in pain from what we understand, which caused the slurred speech.
"Obviously no one wants to film after a procedure, but it happened.
"The feeling was one of huge sympathy for Matthew especially in recent days given how people have reacted online.
"Matthew has told those around him that he is sober, and there is no need to worry."
Matthew has struggled with addiction since his early 20s – after joining smash hit show Friends as Chandler Bing in 1994.
He once even admitted to "not remembering three years" of filming due to his reliance on drugs and alcohol.
The TV star had his first stint in rehab in 1997, though he has returned to facilities several times over the past two decades.
Matthew's alcohol addiction has caused him many health issues throughout the years, including pancreatitis and gastrointestinal perforation.
The 17 Again star recently sparked controversy when his Raya celebrity dating profile was discovered.
The actor, who claimed to be 48 instead of his true age of 51, wrote in his bio: "Six feet tall. Looking for miss right or to have some fun along the way. Prefer the natural look."
Matthew's profile shocked fans, as he got engaged to fiancee Molly Hurwitz in November.
Earlier this month the actor was called out for allegedly sending "creepy" messages to a 19-year-old girl named Kate Haralson.
The teen told Page Six that she met him on the dating service last May,but he immediately requested they move their conversations to FaceTime.
The Friends reunion special called The One Where They Get Back Together is due to air on May 27, 2021, on HBO Max.
All six original cast members including Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Matthew will return to the screen.
The Sun revealed how producers have also roped in some of the world's biggest stars for cameo appearances.
Guests are thought to include Justin Bieber, James Corden, David Beckham, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga and Reese Witherspoon.
The Sun reached out to a rep for Matthew for comment.
