Mary Poppins Returns sequel in "early stages" director confirms

Mary Poppins Returns may have ended with our favourite nanny flying off back into the clouds, but that hasn’t stopped Disney looking at creating a sequel.

The film was a hit at the box office, taking in more than $260 million worldwide.

It isn’t that surprising to hear then, that another cinema offering is in the early stages – though lets hope this one doesn’t take 64 years to get to the big screen.

Speaking to The Sun, director Rob Marshall said the team behind Mary Poppins Returns is in the "early stages" of working on a follow-up.

He said: “It is early stages but I will say right now that there were eight books, so there’s a lot of great material still to mine. That’s what we worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know…”

Marshall suggested Mary Poppins could have lead to a franchise similar to Star Wars or James Bond.

“Listen, how many Star Wars films have there been, you know what I mean? Or James Bond films. If there’s a great character and story to tell, why not?”

Producer John DeLuca agreed, saying he thinks a third film will happen too.

He praised Emily Blunt’s performance as Mary, as she took on the mantle from Julie Andrews who starred as the nanny in the 1964 original movie.

“Emily does light up when she speaks to me about it," DeLuca said. "And if the people want it, I think it will happen.”

Despite the film’s success, Mary Poppins Returns and Blunt missed out on BAFTA nominations.

She also lost out on The Golden Globe for Best Actress Musical or Comedy to Olivia Colman who won for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite.
