Alan Titchmarsh, 72, was joined by the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson to discuss her new book Her Heart for a Compass. Discussions revolved around her new book, what inspired her and her new life as a grandmother as her daughter Princess Eugenie recently gave birth to her son, August. Talk also turned to her previous marriage to Prince Andrew, where she described him as a “wonderful man”.

After speaking about the amount of attention the Duchess got through the press, Alan asked: “I don’t want to dig up that sort of thing in the past, but generally speaking would you do anything differently now to what you did then?

“Do you think you were too open; would you stay more private than you did back then?

“Because you were saying about your mistakes, but I mean could they have been avoided do you think?”

Sarah agreed and replied: “I was probably too enthusiastic which, you know, I was just being myself.

“And I think that if you look back, absolutely 100 percent in 1986 best day of my life.

“The 23rd of July and married a wonderful man and I would definitely do that again.

“Perhaps I could have learned to play the game a little better but hey ho we’re here today and I’m still alive.”

The royal went on: “I’m really really happy today and I’m being really authentic with you just being here and it’s a total joy.”

Alan then went on to ask: “You seem to have kept up a very good relationship with Her Majesty the Queen, you were at Balmoral, and I’m told that you get on very well.”

The Duchess became emotional as she replied: “Whenever I’m asked about who is the most extraordinary person I’ve ever met in my entire life, I’m lucky enough to say that – it makes me want to cry,

“Her Majesty’s just a legend, I mean she’s iconic she’s the grandmother of this nation and every minute I have to pinch myself how lucky I am.

“Just exceptional, I mean just a total leader and beyond anything else look how we rely on Her Majesty.

“I am just honoured to sometimes even be in the same room just for a minute, it is a total and utter…I have no words for it.”

On March 19, 1986, Prince Andrew who was fourth in line to the throne at the time, announced his engagement to Sarah Ferguson.

The pair had known one another since their childhoods and would occasionally meet at polo matches but became reacquainted with each other at Royal Ascot in 1985.

However, their marriage didn’t last long as they separated just six years later in 1992 and officially divorced in 1996.

The Duchess of York has previously spoken about their divorce and told Harper’s Bazaar in 2007: “Two weeks after the wedding, the courtiers told Andrew who thought he’s stationed in London, ‘You have to go to sea’.

“I spent my entire first pregnancy alone and when Beatrice was born, Andrew got 10 days of shore leave and when he left, I cried.”

Despite their divorce, Prince Andrew and Sarah are still good friends and share close bonds with their two daughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.
