Little Mix have just made history as the first female act to win Best British Group at the BRIT Awards 2021.

On Tuesday night (11 May), it was announced that the girl trio had won the BRIT award – a historic achievement – and the band announced they have "just made history" by winning the award.

In their emotional winning speech live on ITV, the group opened with: "We have been together for 10 years.

"It's been the best years of our lives, we have gone through so much, we've had so much fun. We've made so many beautiful memories."

And they also made sure to pay thanks to their past member, Jesy Nelson, who quit the band last year due to mental health reasons.

The band started out with their round of thanks, as Leigh-Anne Pinnock said: "We want to start by thanking our incredible fans."

And she added: "Of course Jesy."

The girl trio also made an inspiring statement in the speech, explaining that "it's not easy being a female in the UK pop industry".

"We've seen the white male dominance, misogyny, sexism and lack of diversity. We're proud of how we've stuck together, stood our ground, surrounded ourselves with strong women, and are now using our voices more than ever," they added.

Member Jade Thirlwall then stepped in to continue: "The fact that a girl band has never won this award really does speak volumes.

"So this award isn't just for us, it's for the Spice Girls, Sugababes, All Saints, Girls Aloud, all of the incredible, incredible female bands, this one's for you".

We previously reported that Little Mix were announced as one of the nominees for the Best Group award back on 31 March 2021.

The trio's ex-member, Jesy, had announced she was quitting the girlband after almost a decade back in December 2020.
