Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper 'may never wake up from Covid coma'

Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper ‘may never come out of his coma’ after contracting coronavirus nine months ago, according to Piers Morgan who made the heartbreaking update on Good Morning Britain today.

Alongside Susanna Reid, Piers interviewed vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi, whose uncle died last week from Covid, after being unable to get vaccinated in time.

The presenting duo sent their condolences to Mr Zahawi’s family, and said: ‘Very sorry to him, Nadhim, and his family, it’s horrible.

‘I know people who have lost parents, who’ve lost uncles, family members and it’s devastating.

‘When I see these Covid, not the deniers, but also the Covid down-players – the ones who constantly want to talk it all down – to say it’s just another flu and we’re overreacting, ask around now, ask enough people and you’ll find somebody.’

‘We know from our colleague Kate Garraway whose husband Derek is still in a coma from Covid,’ he added.

‘He may never come out of that coma. She’s been told this and it’s heartbreaking.’

Derek has been in hospital since the end of March last year, and has remained there ever since, with his two children, Darcy and Billy, unable to see him.

New lockdown restrictions at the beginning of January meant that Kate is now also unable to be by his bedside.

Giving an update on Derek’s wellbeing last week, Kate said the battle was ‘far from over’ but they are continuing to fight.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
