Inside Grand Designs' £6m 'zig-zag' orchard house dubbed 'breathtaking' by host Kevin McCloud | The SunOctober 31, 2022
A STUNNING zig-zag house featured on Grand Designs has been listed for sale five years on from it appearing on the show.
The beautiful home located in Hertfordshire is named Abbey Orchard House and took 10 years to create.
Just half a mile from the town of St Albans, the impressive family home is now on the market for £5.25 million.
The house was designed by its owners Chris and Kayo, a Japanese figure skating champion, along with their architect Rogan Gale-Brown.
Upon viewing the property on a 2017 episode of Grand Designs, host Kevin McCloud referred to the house as: “Part Japanese, part medieval cloister, part Roman villa in influence”.
The house was subject to strict planning restrictions as a result of the ground it was created on and was purchased by the owners when they were living just next door.

The house was required to follow the lines of previous archaeology trenches to respect the medieval and Roman remains that were buried underneath and as such the property was created from impressive timber frames and was only built as a single storey.
Upon completion, the property spanned an impressive 5,175 square feet and features an incredible five bedrooms along with five bathrooms.
The abode also has four equally as charming reception rooms, perfect for a family to wind down in after a long and stressful day.
Described as the ‘main event’, one reception room features a central geometric wood burner which leads onto a dining room and then the kitchen in a seamless transition created to fit with the house’s flow and decision to shun corridors in favour of one large open-wide space.

The orchard house, which was dubbed ‘breathtaking’ by Kevin, sits nestled amongst two acres of greenery situated by the River Ver.
Upon entrance to the house via two double entrance doors, visitors to the home are greeted by a 30-metre glazed atrium with light bursting in from its many floor to ceiling windows.
Remarking on its unique design, Kevin commented: “Inside, it’s breathtaking, the light is so soft that you can almost touch it; taste it.”
Each of the five bedrooms also feature an impressive terrace, perfect for picking up a few sun rays.
The multi-million pound property also features hidden gems too that you would only find in such an expensive and plush pad.
The home has a cinema room with a 120-inch screen and blackout blinds as well as a snug that comfortably fits 10.
