‘I work on The Chase and here’s why we don’t want more quizzers to join line-up’

The Chase stars Anne Hegerty and Mark Labbett have revealed why they don't want any more quizzers to join the line-up of the popular ITV show.

There are currently six Chasers who take it in turns and take on members of the public in a series of general knowledge questions.

Mark, otherwise known as The Beast, has been part of the series since the first series aired in 2009.

Like Mark, The Dark Destroyer star Shaun Wallace has been part of the family since the debut season 14 years ago.

Anne, who is better known as The Governess, joined for series two, meanwhile The Sinnerman aka Paul Sinha was recruited for series four followed by The Vixen star Jenny Ryan, who made her debut in series nine.

Darragh Ennis, otherwise known as The Menace, appeared as a contestant on The Chase before he became a Chaser in series 13.

Speaking about whether or not she'd like to see more quizzers join the show, Anne told Daily Star: "The thing is you see that every time they add a new Chaser, we only get paid per show that we do.

"We don't get a salary, we get a fee per show we do.

"They are recording fewer shows because we've got so many shows in the can and then add another Chaser and everybody's money goes down but that said Darragh is a lovely person.

"When he appeared he certainly sent the ratings up a lot."

Mark agreed with his co-star and added that stars appearing on the Australian version of The Chase are struggling to make a living off with their wage from the programme.

"If I could get away with it I'd purge half of them because the fewer Chasers there are, the more money I get," he joked.

"We say that is because we've seen it in Australia.

"They've moved up to eight chasers and the problem is they are now in a horrible trap that they can't make a full-time living off it."

Mark told Daily Star: "They are spreading it so thin some of the Chasers are starting to think 'I can't do this unless you give me a certain number of shows a year'.

"We're lucky we've got extracurricular gigs in England but in Australia they've got next to nothing so I'm glad I don't have to rely on the Australian money."

The Chase airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 5pm
