The former SAS serviceman is an adventurer and explorer who has become a huge name for his TV survival skills – but what else do we know about the star and is Bear his real name?

Who is Bear Grylls?

Bear Grylls was born on June 7, 1974, to Sir Michael Grylls and Lady Sarah Grylls in Northern Island.

Being surrounded by the great outdoors became second nature to Bear, who spent his free time learning how to climb and sail with his father.

He also trained as a boy cub scout when he was eight and later went on to study at Eton College, where he created a mountaineering club.

As an adult he joined the Territorial Army and Special Air Service (SAS), where he perfected his survival skills such as parachuting, unarmed combat and evasive driving.

Is Bear Grylls really called Bear Grylls?

Many people have queried whether Bear is his actual name, and they would be right to.

His real name is actually Edward Michael Grylls but he doesn't use this name in his professional line of work.

His older sister Lara Fawcett gave him the nickname of Bear when he was a young boy and it has stuck ever since.

When has Bear Grylls hosted The Island and Celebrity Island?

Bear has been with the Channel 4 show since its conception in 2014.

Currently three seasons have aired, with a fourth set to be launched in 2017.

Bear narrates the show, which sees a group of participants being left by themselves on a remote island and forced to find food and shelter using basic survival skills.

Is Bear Grylls the Chief Scout?

Bear Grylls was made the youngest Chief Scout ever at the age of 34.

The role seeks to provide leadership within the Scout organisation and help the Scouts reach as wide an audience as possible.

As a survival host, inspirational speaker and author, Bear was a natural candidate for the position.

What TV shows has Bear Grylls taken part in?

The survival expert has taken part in numerous TV shows over the years, including the well-known Man vs. Wild, which he did for seven seasons from 2006 to 2011.

He has also done two seasons of Mission Survive, which saw celebs, including Mike Tindall and Laurence and Emilia Fox, tackle a gruelling 12 day survival mission.

He's also hosted Get Out Alive in 2013, Escape from Hell in 2013 and Running Wild with Bear Grylls in 2014 where he met Barack Obama.

Is Bear Grylls married?

In 2000, Bear tied the knot with Shara Cannings Knight and the pair have three sons together, Marmaduke, Jesse and Huckleberry.

The TV adventurer was slammed last year after declaring the secret to a happy marriage is putting his wife’s needs before those of his kids.

He said to The Sun's TV magazine: "I’ve been married for 17 years to an absolute gem of a lady who has kindness oozing out of her pores.

"I think that is a big part of what makes a successful, lasting marriage."
