Grey’s Anatomy fans had to wait longer than normal for its latest season due to the delay in filming. Series 16 was shorter than usual as shooting had to stop midway through because of the coronavirus pandemic. So viewers were thrilled when the ABC drama did make a comeback last month, premiering on Thursday, November 12 with a two-part special.

Grey’s Anatomy season 17 was launched with two episodes being shown back-to-back, focusing on COVID-19 and its impact on the staff at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

The surgeons were visibly struggling to keep up with the demand of in-patients and Dr Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo) caught the virus herself.

Understandably, her friends and colleagues were worried for her welfare and her condition worsened so she was put into a “COVID coma”.

Meredith was last seen lying in a hospital bed, unconscious and unaware of everyone else’s concern.

Is Grey’s Anatomy back on this week?

Grey’s Anatomy season 17, episode three, My Happy Ending, aired on Thursday, November 19, on ABC.

After this episode was shown, it was revealed the medical drama wasn’t going to be on the following week.

This was because last Thursday, November 26, was Thanksgiving which typically means there are changes to the regular TV schedule.

Despite the pandemic, this year was no different and Grey’s Anatomy was put on hold to show a musical extravaganza.

In Grey’s Anatomy’s place was The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration, hosted by Derek and Julianne Hough and Grown-ish star Trevor Jackson.

Derek, Julianne and Trevor were at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to present the Thanksgiving special and the couple even performed a medley of holiday classics.

While there would be a star-studded concert shown on ABC every other year, the pandemic meant this couldn’t go ahead and so highlights from previous shows were played instead.

But with Thanksgiving now done and dusted with, it’s time for Grey’s Anatomy to make its return.

Grey’s Anatomy will be back on our screens this week on Thursday, December 3.

The fourth episode is called You’ll Never Walk Alone and the synopsis for the show reads: “Owen faces a medical diagnosis that challenges more than he imagined.

“Meanwhile, Koracick begins to go stir crazy; and Maggie gets a not-so-subtle glimpse into Winston’s background.”

Sadly though, it will once again be time for Grey’s Anatomy to take another break but a much longer one.

The drama’s midseason finale will air on Thursday, December 17, on ABC.

But after this, viewers are going to have to wait until 2021 for episode seven of series 17.

A title hasn’t been revealed for this installment just yet but according to IMDB, the release date will be Thursday, March 4, 2021.

So fans need to soak up as much of Grey’s Anatomy while they can before it disappears for another few months.

Grey’s Anatomy is available to watch on ABC.
