Great British Bake Off fans furious over double-elimination twist: ‘Absolute joke!’

September 24, 2019

Tonight’s double elimination of Michelle and Helena left fans of the Great British Bake Off furious as they insisted another baker should have been shown the door. For the first week, Helena won the technical challenge which made her exit even more baffling to viewers.

Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith weren’t too impressed with Helena’s Bram Stoker inspired cake, which was bright red sponge flavoured with raspberry vodka.

She opted for a slightly unusual take on the 1920s prohibition theme but fans fell for her unique idea.

The judges on the other hand weren’t quite so taken with her offering, with Paul noting he couldn’t taste the raspberry, just vodka.

Prue meanwhile joked that if she squinted, Helena’s cake resembled something quite nice.

Michelle also faced tough feedback from the judges in the showstopper round as they tore into her cake.

Sandi Toksvig was far from happy she had to reveal the first two eliminated bakers while Steph took star baker once more.

Speaking after being booted off the show, Michelle said: “I’ve loved it.

“It’s been fun. It’s been emotional.”

Helena added she was “okay” about the judges’ decision, remarking: “I’ve had an amazing time.”

Co-host Noel Fielding was not happy that he had to say goodbye to Helena but Paul told him it was time, adding: “Sorry!”

Fans agreed with Noel with many taking to Twitter to express their frustration.

“Seriously, don’t understand that at all. Very weird decision. #gbbo #GBBO2019,” one fan tweeted.

A third continued: “I…do not understand the decisions. #GBBO There were no standouts this week but no way were Michelle & Helena were the worst.”

“This is absolute joke! Wrong decision! #GBBO,” someone else shared.

The decision came after Michael struggled with his technical challenge and broke down in tears.

He was forced to make a second batch of choux pastry for his beignets leaving him with little time to complete the challenge.

As he began to cry, Noel suggested he take a walk but Michel insisted he had to stay and bake.

While he didn’t finish in ninth place, things worked out as he impressed the judges more with his showstopper.

Will he survive another week?

Great British Bake Off airs Wednesday on Channel 4 at 8pm.
