Dick Strawbridge and his wife Angel Adoree had set out to promote their new book Living the Chateau Dream!. In their new publication, the pair share more charming stories from their life at the Chateau-de-la-Motte Husson. During a live chat, hosted by the couple on their website, Dick had opened up about their financial struggles before the TV show had launched on Channel 4.
The father of four explained: “We didn’t know if anyone was going to watch the television programme and exactly when it was going to be on telly.”
Dick revealed: “But we actually, we spent all our money.”
Shortly after, the crafty couple turned to each other and began to laugh at themselves.
Gracing screens on Channel 4 back in 2015, the DIY gurus have continued to amaze audiences with their impeccable renovations.
After admitting the pair had spent all of their money on the French Chateau, Dick said: “That was quite a large part but we had to make things work.”
“We had plans, that was the….size of the challenge we had.”
Wife Angel chirped: “Well, and we had this big, big, big blank canvas as well.”
Speaking on the grand scale of the 19th century Chateau, the TV presenter told fans: “Somehow, we had one room, a functioning room which was a honeymoon suite.”
“A possible letting room, [and] the reception rooms,” he added.
The vintage clad redhead spoke candidly about the struggles they faced before the restorations had even begun.
She told fans: “We had the chateau as a backdrop and we had to, this is why we talk about it being the building bit because we had to build the business from nothing.”
She added: “And yet, we’ve got this, sort of, lovely home.
“But you know, we didn’t have the funds so we were, you know, taking favours from friends.”
Dick confessed: “I took any job that was coming.”
Before the gushy mother told audiences: “Yeah, you went out to work as a television presente
“Because anything came into the pot,” Dick admitted.
The 45-bedroom castle includes 12 acres of land and stood empty for 40 years until the pair purchased it for £280,000.
The much-loved DIY duo also share two children together, Arthur and Dorothy, who also make an appearance on the Channel 4 show.
The family favourite programme has now concluded its eighth season.
Escape To The Chateau is available to watch on All4.
