Emmerdale's Susan Cookson was ready to give up acting following husband's death

July 3, 2023

Emmerdale star Susan Cookson revealed that she considered changing her career to become a nurse following the tragic death of her husband.

The actress, 58, who plays Wendy Posner in the ITV soap, was married to The Inbetweeners star Malcolm Scates before he died in 2018 following a brain tumor.

Susan admitted that following his death, she was ready to quit acting to become a nurse and help others.

She explained: ‘I was at a bit of a crossroads in my life through one thing and another and I decided that I wanted a more regular job.

‘I started to think about changing careers and going into nursing. My husband, who is sadly no longer with us, had been very poorly and I’d nursed him.’

She added to the Mirror: ‘And I’d played a lot of doctors and nurses over the years, so it was a career I knew a bit about.’

However, as the star was driving to meet a nursing manager for advice, she then received a phone call offering her a role as nurse Wendy in Emmerdale.

Best known for playing Maggie Coldwell in Casualty from 2005-2009, Susan has now been playing devoted mum Wendy in Emmerdale for four years.
