Corrie star Gemma Oaten reveals ‘her darkest days in hospital’

Gemma Oaten has bravely spoken out about her darkest days in hospital when she was suffering from an eating disorder.

In an exclusive interview with the Sun, she described how staff used the ITV soap as a reward, only allowing her to watch it if she had made sufficient effort to eat.

She said: “I nearly didn’t make it because of the eating disorder. I almost died four times. I spent a lot of my life in hospitals, eating disorder units and psychiatric units. My favourite TV shows got me through.

“Some of these places were backwards in their approach. The psychiatric unit I was in when I was 11 was brutal.

Her eating disorder caused Gemma to suffer a heart attack when she was just 18 years old

“It was very much reward and punishment, so if I’d put on weight I’d be allowed to watch television. I’d watch Coronation Street and escape into it and have that little bit of fire inside me thinking, ‘I can beat this eating disorder — I can get better and go for my dreams’.

“Eating disorders make you lose sight of a lot of things, but I still dared to dream that I’d be on Corrie one day.”

    Another explosive Coronation Street spoiler

This week Faye will be visited by dad Tim and it’s clear she isn’t coping well in prison.

So Debbie decides to take matters into her own hands and starts digging into Ray’s crimes to find something to use against him.

And she does – as she finds proof he paid someone to create the sinkhole in the Platts’ garden.

It led to the deaths of Johnny Connor and unwittingly Natasha Blakeman.

Visiting him in prison she tells him that unless he pleads guilty to sexually assaulting Faye, she’s going to report him to the police for the death of Johnny Connor.

With the sexual assault confession in, it will mean Faye has a chance at appealing her sentence for attacking Adam.

And the soap has already revealed it will be successful.

How long has Coronation Street been on our screens?

FROM the moment Coronation Street first aired live on December 9, 1960, millions have been gripped by the ups and downs of Weatherfield’s residents.

Its early days portrayed a realistic kitchen-sink drama showing the ordinary day-to-day lives of working-class northerners, and the show was considered ground-breaking.

But not everyone liked it. One early critic wrote: “The programme is doomed from the outset . . . with its dreary signature tune and grim scenes of a row of terraced houses.”

Over sixty years on and the signature tune and terraced houses are still there.

Inside EastEnders star Milly Zero’s life

EASTENDERS fans are used to seeing star Milly Zero in the role of the scheming Dotty Cotton.

The young actress' life is a world away from life on Albert Square, with glam nights out and a famous rapper boyfriend – not to mention her lookalike mum.

Milly, 22, joined the cast as Dot Branning's granddaughter in 2019, replacing Molly Conlin who had previously played the role as a child.

And it's not the first time the Peckham-born star had been on TV either.

But the budding star actually made her television debut when she was 13 in CBBC's All At Sea.

When her role on EastEnders was announced, Milly gushed: "I am honestly so excited to be playing Dotty Cotton and joining the E20 family, especially playing alongside June Brown, who I have been watching on my telly since I was a young girl.

“Her and Dotty have such an interesting relationship to explore with a complicated history, so I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them. It all feels very surreal and I am buzzing already."
