December 11, 2022

EastEnders' Sonia Fowler will bump into her rumoured new love interest at Dot Cotton’s funeral when it airs next week – and sparks are set to fly.

Sonia, played by Natalie Cassidy, meets up with Dot’s great-nephew Reiss Colwell, portrayed by Jonny Freeman, when the BBC show airs on Monday (December 12).

Three of late Dot actress June Brown’s kids will also appear in the extended episode after the star died in April (2022).

This comes after Sonia actress Natalie opened up about how she found it difficult and "upsetting" to film Dot's funeral scenes.

Acting legend June died in April at the age of 95 years old, and now the BBC soap is gearing up to pay tribute to her legacy by airing a special extended edition of the programme.

The episode will see current Albert Square residents and old friends including Colin Russell (Lord Michael Cashman CBE), Barry Clark (Gary Hailes) and George 'Lofty' Holloway (Tom Watt).

Other former stars making a comeback include: Mary ‘'the punk' Smith (Linda Davidson), Disa O’Brien (Jan Graveson) and Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) – as they all come together to say goodbye to the beloved character – and actress.

Speaking about filming the funeral scenes, Sonia Jackson star Natalie Cassidy admitted to The Sun: "It is upsetting to me."

Paying tribute to the late soap icon, Natalie continued: "I was very, very close to June. She taught me a lot."

It is reported that Sonia will be central to the heart-breaking scenes, saying that it was "not only an honour, it is a big responsibility" to be leading the episodes.

The actress also revealed that she believes June would have approved of the funeral episodes, saying: "I think she’d be thrilled by it and bowled over. She was such a modest lady at times and she never wanted a fuss."

EastEnders airs weekdays (except Fridays) on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
