WHITNEY Dean faced heartbreak during last night's trip to Albert Square.

However, EastEnders fans were shocked to spot a famous comedian make an appearance during the storyline.

Eager to become a mother, Whitney (portrayed by Shona McGarty) learned her pregnancy wasn't going as well as she had hoped.

On Monday's episode of the BBC One program, the market trader and Zack Hudson (James Farrar) learned their unborn child was suffering from Edwards' Syndrome.

The pair made the difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy in tear-jerking scenes.

But amid the whirlwind of emotions, viewers of the London-based program were left with their jaws dropped when comedian Alison Spittle appeared in the soap.

The 34-year-old played the part of a pregnant woman who spoke to Whitney at the doctor's surgery.

This led to stunned fans to swarm over to Twitter.

"Scuse me was that Alison Spittle I just seen on EastEnders", one of them questioned while another echoed: "Was that Alison Spittle on Eastenders?"

Viewers had been warned that Alison would be a part of the show as the Irish star herself tweeted that she would have her own stint on our screens.

"On my way to @TamsynKelly's house to watch EastEnders as my internet's gone and I want to see myself on EastEnders and tweet along live", she penned.

One viewer responded: "That was a lovely surprise to see you pop up! Hope you come back, move onto the square with the child and start work in the laundrette!"

"Alison she’s never let me watch Eastenders there so you must have some real dirt on her (I’m so excited shall cheer at the screen", another wrote.

Another jumped in: "I don't normally watch it. Sat here eating my dinner and saw you & thought 'Alison Spittle!' You did a great job on the accent and all. Well done."

Alison had some fans fooled hours before her appearance was aired.

Taking to Instagram, the funnywoman showed herself with a baby bump.

"I’ve been keeping this a secret for a while", she captioned.

But when her fans were sent into a frenzy at the thought of her expecting her first child, Alison decided to clear things up and announced she wasn't pregnant – but her on-screen character was.
