Don’t Freak Out, But ‘Insecure’ Season 5 Will Be Here Sooner Than You Think

August 24, 2021

When Insecure season 4 wrapped in June 2020, we were left with a ton of Issa-Molly baggage to sort through and, uh, so. many. questions. Like, will Issa and Lawrence stay together? How will Condola handle a literal infant? Will Nathan work his way back into Issa’s affections? And will Molly and Issa ever get over their “trauma bonding”?

Thankfully, we will get our answers soon, like super soon, since season 5 of the Emmy-nominated dramedy drops this fall! (That’s right, #LawrenceHive. It’s time to get all the way in formation to root for y’all’s king). An actual release date hasn’t been put out yet, but we are buckling TF up for what is sure to be an absolutely thrilling and wild ride. Here’s every single thing we know about season 5 so far.

Insecure Season 5 is coming in October!

The end is near, friends. The show’s official Twitter page recently announced that Insecure season 5 will air in October, and it is, indeed, the last season of the show *sheds thug tear*. “The wait is almost over. The final season. October💜.” read the post, which was accompanied by an image of the series star and creator, Issa Rae.

The announcement came just a few days after fans started lovingly trolling Issa about when the show would drop. She responded to the playful taunts with, “😂 chillchillchill we’re editing the finale. Y’all gone see a little something soon. In the meantime, check out my nieces and nephews on @SweetLifeonMax”.

When the final season started filming in January, Issa posted a loop video on Instagram outside of her trailer with the caption, “First Day of Season Bye-ve #InsecureHBO.” OMG, stop it, so many mixed emotions 😭.

Don’t expect the coronavirus to make a huge splash onscreen

When asked whether the pandemic would be part of the season 5 story, Issa told Variety in May 2020 that the team was still trying to determine how they wanted to handle it onscreen. “I think there might be a world where we acknowledge it in the background, because I think it obviously will have long-lasting impacts.”

A part of wanting to acknowledge the pandemic in the show comes from the ways the pandemic has impacted the Black community. “But one of the saddest things is seeing how it’s affecting my favorite restaurants in South L.A., my favorite black businesses are being impacted and having to close shop, and so we don’t want to feel tone-deaf in ignoring it,” Issa continued in the Variety interview. “We’ve always taken pride in representing the city as is.”

In a recent interview with People, Issa did say that the pandemic would play a role in the final season to some degree, specifically around the characters’ decision-making. “They’re asking themselves, ‘Are we going to be okay?’ Because so much happened last season in their lives. We thought they would be faced with this question of despair, and that question will motivate them throughout the season.”

Today is my last day shooting #InsecureHBO. 🥲

Said goodbye to some of my favorite people on Earth, on and off screen, this past week.

Never imagined all the doors this would open. Forever grateful to those who paved the way for us to do us. pic.twitter.com/EUz6IOe85N

We’ll get answers about Issa and Lawrence’s future together

Just as the pair started getting into a good groove with dates, hangouts at home, planning their future together, and ofc, lots. of. sex., Lawrence had to turn around and find out that his ex-girlfriend Condola is pregnant with his baby. Yikes! This changes Issa’s perfect vision juuust a bit! The finale ends without letting us know if Issa and Lawrence decide to stick it out together.

“It’s purposefully ambiguous, that that’s the moment we leave the scene,” said showrunner Prentice Penny to Entertainment Weekly. “The stuff we want to explore in season 5 is, what happens now?”
