Doctor Who graphic novel on hold after John Barrowman allegations

June 12, 2021

A Doctor Who graphic novel, which was set to follow John Barrowman’s character Captain Jack Harkness, has been put on hold after allegations against him.

The graphic novel has been taken down from the Penguin Random House website, with a deleted synopsis reading: ‘A thrilling new Doctor Who Graphic Novel which stars fan-favorite Captain Jack Harkness as he goes up against the insidious Torchwood institute!’

The synopsis also said that the tale ‘tied directly in with episode two of the hotly anticipated series 13’, suggesting that Barrowman may have filmed scenes for the upcoming series.

A spokesperson for publisher Titan Comics told Radio Times: ‘We have no plans to publish this comic collection at this time.’

Torchwood actor Barrowman admitted to ‘tomfoolery’ while filming the BBC drama, after two former runners came forward with allegations that he would ‘get his genitals out on a regular basis’.

The 54-year-old told the Guardian that his behaviour was ‘only ever intended in good humour to entertain colleagues on set and backstage’.

‘With the benefit of hindsight, I understand that upset may have been caused by my exuberant behaviour and I have apologised for this previously,’ he added.

‘Since my apology in November 2008, my understanding and behaviour have also changed.’

A spokesperson for the BBC also told Metro.co.uk: ‘The BBC is against all forms of inappropriate behaviour and we’re shocked to hear of these allegations.

‘To be absolutely clear, we will investigate any specific allegations made by individuals to the BBC – and if anyone has been subjected to or witnessed inappropriate behaviour of any kind we would encourage them to raise it with us directly.

‘We have a zero tolerance approach and robust processes are in place – which are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect best practice – to ensure any complaints or concerns are handled with the utmost seriousness and care.’

Since the allegations, Barrowman has been axed from Doctor Who: Time Fracture and a Torchwood audio drama starring him has been pulled.

He has also pulled out of appearing in a pantomime this Christmas ‘due to the dates clashing with his tour.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted Titan Comics and Penguin Random House for comment.

Doctor Who series 13 is expected to air this year.
