Seven years ago, Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree packed their bags and left England for France with a plan; to convert and 45-room Chateau into a family home and thriving business. Understandably, it hasn’t been easy, but with their failures and successes documented on Escape to the Chateau, the couple are now turning their attention to the land around their 19th-century property as well as the outbuildings. During a previous conversation with The Good Life France, Dick and Angel were asked how they manage to make the ideas and visions they have for any transformation or project, fun.
The author of the article said viewers “can tell when Dick is exasperated with one of Angel’s ideas, and when Angel is peeve that Dick doesn’t get her vision”.
Their response to ensuring everything they do is “fun” was to “have the same goal.
“Although sometimes we may have different ideas about how things can/should be done, we trust each other’s instincts,” the couple explained.
“There are always going to be challenges but we’re both equally focused.
“We’re in love with this project and creating the life we want for ourselves and Arthur and Dorothy.”
The husband and wife duo also spoke about the worst job they had to take on when transforming the Chateau.
“Probably clearing the bird droppings from the attic – it wasn’t the smell it was the very fine dust,” they revealed. “And of course, we did it in the summer when it was extremely hot!
“Reckon we’d make it a winter job if we did it again.”
With so much to do, and a lot of ambition to see their ideas come to live, what motivates Dick and Angel?
“We love that we’ve brought the chateau back to life!” They explained. “Yes, there are challenges and a project like this is a marathon not a sprint, but we are doing it for the family and that is more than enough motivation.”
Millions tune into every series of Escape to the Chateau and many have been inspired to try up-turning their lives and following their own dreams.
Last year, Dick and Angel had a new spin-off show air on Channel 4 – Escape to the Chateau: DIY and this year, Escape to the Chateau: Make Do and Mend will hit screens.
But what key pieces of advice do they have for anyone thinking of starting out or for those who have just taken the plunge of a new life adventure?
“Do it for the right reasons – know what you want and then go for it,” they said. “That way problems will always be overcome rather than putting an end to your dream.
“Have a plan. Planning ahead must include how you are going to live and earn money. This will also help you when you’re prioritising renovations.

“Be patient, the search is all part of the journey so don’t settle for something that isn’t absolutely right for you. We know a wise lady who always says, ‘if it’s meant for you, it won’t go by you,’” they added.
As for some top tips on start gin a business in France, the answers read: “Do the sums – a quaint tea room will not pay for a chateau.
“Know your target customers – if you are interested in the British market think about their travel.
“There’s a lot of competition so what makes you stand out? Invest in good photography, a website and social media. This will be the most cost-effective way to promote your business,” they said.
As for when Escape to the Chateau returns to television screens, it may be some time.
A fan asked Dick on Twitter: When are you back on TV dick?”
He replied: “Filming at the moment but we’ll let you know when we know!!”
