Amos has been wowing fans of the hit BBC comedy crime drama since joining the cast in series eight. But in a surprise move last year, the actress – who is set to appear on tonight’s edition of Celebrity MasterChef – admitted in 2019 she wanted the actor she replaced on the show to return back. Danny John-Jules, known for his character Officer Dwayne Myers, left the cast last year having already starred in the BBC’s flagship reality show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

Yet, when discussing with Hello! who she wanted to see back on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe for filming, she admitted John-Jules was high on her list.

She said: “I actually don’t know him – he’s done so much with Red Dwarf and I think he’s definitely that person on screen that people know.

“Although I didn’t watch Death in Paradise religiously, I knew he was in it and I knew how popular he was. I am up for working with Danny John-Jules, absolutely!”

Amos’ character initially split fans, with many upset at one of the cast’s longest serving members leaving their much loved show.

She admitted that the process was “exciting and completely overwhelming” as it was one of her first TV jobs.

Amos added: “I have done a couple of things before but nothing on this level. That’s been amazing but obviously I am taking over Dwayne.

“Basically, be a newbie stepping into that persona – it’s been overwhelming and exciting at the same time… I think they really decided with bringing Ruby on they wanted something that might be considered a bit different… I think on my first week people were like, ‘What? Who is this person? What is she doing here?’

“Definitely had a split audience, ‘Do they like her, do they not like her,’ but I think so many people said she was a breath of fresh air – she has solidified herself in the team.”

Amos was a relative unknown and had only previously been seen on screen in a bit-part role in the acclaimed series ‘A Very English Scandal’.

Audiences of Death in Paradise – which has been on air since 2011 – have now taken Officer Patterson to their hearts.

Her character is the niece of the Commissioner, who at first appeared more inclined to gossip as opposed to carrying out any vital police work.

But she managed to win her colleagues over – and now Amos will be hopeful she can win over cooking judges on the BBC show tonight.

Ahead of her appearance on Celebrity MasterChef – which begins at 9pm and will continue on Friday – she described herself as a “home-cook”.

She will star in tonight’s show alongside the likes of iconic footballer John Barnes – renowned for his trophy-winning days at Liverpool Football Club.
