Dan Walker, 44, announced last week he would be stepping down from his role as host of Football Focus after 12 years in the hot seat. Since then, speculation has been rife as to who could fill his shoes in the leading position, with names such as Good Morning Britain presenter Ben Shephard, 46, thrown into the ring. However, the BBC has reportedly signed up Alex, 36, will be overseeing proceedings on the show after being a pundit for the network for several years.

A source said: “Alex was deemed the perfect fit for the role. After her stint on Strictly in 2019, her popularity went through the roof.”

The insider went on to add in an interview with The Sun how it was not only Alex’s knowledge of broadcasting that makes her the best replacement but her past as a football player would help her steady the ship.

Express.co.uk has contacted BBC for comment on the reports.
