Coronation Street fans compared the loveable ITV soap to a “horror movie” as Stephen Reid’s killer storyline takes a turn for the worse.

During Thursday’s visit (March 2) to the ITV Cobbles, fans caught up with the Canadian businessman (played by Todd Boyce) as he attempted to take down his co-workers Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) and their boss Carla Connor (Alison King).

But the psychotic killer made his biggest mistake to date after he accidentally spiked his own drink with LSD rather than his colleagues ahead of a big business deal.

And it’s fair to say the entrepreneur got a dose of his own medicine after he spent the rest of the day tripping on the hallucinogenic drug.

In an attempt to hide his drug-induced spiral into madness, Stephen ran to his hotel room where he started to see the bodies of his victims while his colleagues’ faces started to melt in front of him.

But the trippy episode didn’t sit well with viewers at home as they flooded to Twitter to share their thoughts on the “terrifying” episode online.

One user penned: "I can't get over this Corrie episode it feels like a dream. How did we go from Betty serving a hotpot to an average pub customer to faces melting, dead bodies appearing and victims and bodies everywhere #Corrie."

Another agreed: "Am I watching something different to my favourite soap! Totally unacceptable showing drug related harrowing scenes in what use to be a family light entertainment how! Sack the writers before #ofcom get involved #Corrie."

A third fumed: "What is this a horror film? I spilt my coco pops #corrie” while as a fourth argued: "#corrie comes alive when they do these s**t effects, I've nearly wet myself after Sarah's face meltin [cry-laughing emoji]."

But the dramatic episode didn’t end there, after Elaine came to comfort him in the hotel room as she attempted to relieve his symptoms which she attributed to him working too hard.

With Stephen still reeling from the drugs he had accidentally taken, the loveable blonde couldn’t help but talk about their future together in the heart of the countryside.

As he continually agreed with her comments, the businessman accidentally agreed to a marriage proposal as she described him as being “for keeps”.

However, fans know that the Canadian is only using Elain for her money and doesn’t really like her as they shared their fears that she could be his next victim.
