Coronation Street revealed as having soapland's worst crime rate – but bloodbath Hollyoaks has most murders

October 3, 2021

IF SOAP towns were real places absolutely nobody would want to live in them.

The residents of Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and EastEnders are constantly being attacked on their doorsteps and are dropping like flies.

Corrie alone has seen its locals being stabbed, shot, and bludgeoned to death, or shoved off tall buildings – remember Tina McIntyre's balcony death?

Being the longest running soap, it's perhaps no surprise that Corrie has the worst crime rate, with Weatherfield clocking up 467 serious crimes in its 60-year history.

However, only 36 of those resulted in murder so it's probably the most desirable town of them all.

EastEnders has racked up 437 crimes including 42 murders in Albert Square since 1985, and Emmerdale’s had 408 (43 murders) since 1972.

Hollyoaks should be avoided at all costs, with the bloodbath town becoming soapland's murder mile thanks to 85 killings and 115 crimes in total in its 26 years.

The show's 'gloved hand killer' Lindsay Butterfield, played by Sophie Austin, has claimed the most lives out of any soap villain.

Lindsay claimed the lives of seven characters in 2015 many via lethal injection.

Meanwhile, Enders gangster Phil Mitchell has 21 crimes to his name, including torture, arson and firearms possession and manslaughter.

Attempted murderers Steve Owen and Dirty Den – actors Martin Kemp and Leslie Grantham – each achieved 18 offences on EastEnders, Emmerdale’s Debbie Dingle, played by Charley Webb, and Kim Tate – actress Claire King – committed 18 crimes each, and so did Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley).

But for those keeping score, soapland's most prolific villain is Pat Phelan and if convicted, his heinous crimes would have landed him 278 years behind bars in the real world.

He was one of the most feared soap villains of all time, with his reign of terror finally coming to an end in 2018.

Played by Connor McIntyre, he was a businessman, builder and con artist who first arrived on the soap in 2013 and immediately made himself an enemy of the Windass family.

His 22 crimes included four murders, extortion and rape., which compiled the stats, said: “Viewers may want to relax after a hard day with some gentle telly but what they are getting is a Quentin Tarantino-style bloodbath.”
