Dame Judi Dench joined Alan Titchmarsh for the latest instalment of his morning chat show Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh. While sharing her love of living in the countryside and her passion for trees, the star joked when Alan questioned if other actresses only got roles she had turned down. Judi is a ten-time BAFTA winner and has appeared in some of the biggest films and stage shows of her time.

The 87-year-old actress has had an extensive career that spans TV, film and theatre.

Sitting down to chat with her fellow green-fingered friend, she shared how she loves living in the countryside.

Looking back on her career, the talk show host questioned her on rumours he had heard.

He said: “Your colleagues criticise you, Judi, because they say, ‘Well, they only get offered parts when Judi turns them down.'”

Laughing, she cut him off and replied: “You are speaking about Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith.”

Joking, she added: “Complainers, complainers.”

Dame Judi did clarify that it was “not true, of course.”

The star has shared the screen with both of the actresses in question, which she remarked as “unusual” as typically they would be playing the same role, with it going to anyone.

Alan stated: “You did that wonderful film, the four of you together, Eileen Atkins, Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright and yourself, the four dames.

“There seemed to be a great camaraderie between you.”

Judi: “It was lovely and unusual for us all to be together one time. And really, really good fun.”

The documentary, Tea With The Dames, was released in 2018 and featured Judi Dench, Eileen Atkins, Joan Plowright, and Maggie Smith as they got together for tea to reminisce and discuss their acting careers.

She revealed she has a “photographic memory” which allowed her to absorb lines a lot easier when she had full use of her sight but now learning her lines is a lot more “difficult.”
