Christopher McQuarrie to Direct Two New ‘Mission: Impossible’ Films Back-to-BackJanuary 15, 2019
AceShowbiz -Nothing is impossible for Christopher McQuarrie. The filmmaker, who served behind the lens for “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” and “Mission: Impossible – Fallout“, has closed a deal to make not just one, but two new “Mission: Impossible” movies at a time.
Confirming his involvement, McQuarrie tweeted on Monday, January 14, “Missions: Accepted#MissionImpossible. According to Variety, the former regular collaborator of director Bryan Singer will return to write and direct the two sequels. He will reportedly film both movies back-to-back “in order to take advantage of the popularity of the series.”
Tom Cruise is also expected to reprise his role as IMF agent Ethan Hunt. As teased by the actor, the new “Mission: Impossible” movies are scheduled to bow in summer 2021 and summer 2022, to avoid conflict with Paramount and Cruise’s upcoming movie “Top Gun: Maverick“.
The latest “Mission: Impossible” installment, “Fallout”, grossed over $790 million worldwide, against a production budget of $178 million. It’s the best haul in the franchise to date. The movie was also the best reviewed for the franchise, receiving an approval rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Thus, Paramount Pictures looks to repeat the success by bringing McQuarrie back on board the next movies.
No start date is set just yet, but it’s likely to begin sometime in 2019, after Cruise finishes the filming for the “Top Gun” sequel. Other cast members are currently unknown. Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson (II) and Michelle Monaghan were among the returning actors in the last installment.
Tom and McQuarrie have worked together several times besides on the “Mission: Impossible” movies. The filmmaker wrote Bryan Singer’s “Valkyrie” as well as directed “Jack Reacher” and “Edge of Tomorrow“, all three of which star the 56-year-old actor. He also co-wrote the script for “Top Gun: Maverick”, which is directed by Joseph Kosinski.
