Bucks Fizz's Jay Aston wasn't sure she'd make it to Christmas or smile again as she battled mouth cancer

December 11, 2018

The 57-year-old singer admitted fears she wouldn't make it to Christmas, while also revealing her operation left her unable to smile for months.

The Making Your Mind Up hitmaker was diagnosed with the disease in June after noticing a white patch on her tongue had spread.

"I had my last operation in July and I'm still recovering," she told the panel.

"I had to have part of my leg taken off and placed on my neck so they could rebuild my tongue."

The singer then admitted there was a time she doubted she would even make it to the end of the year.

She confessed: "I'm here and I wasn't sure I was going to see Christmas, so I'm very happy."

Despite her pop star career, Jay has also had to learn to sing differently.

She explained: "Basically, my tongue is sewn down to the bottom of my mouth so I've only got one working side.

"It was very painful to smile for a while. I guess it's like scar tissue."

The candid chat saw band member Cheryl Baker burst into tears and emotionally declare: "I can't talk."
Mike Nolan then emotionally chimed: "When you take one of us away, the other two of us are just lost."
