BBC hits back after viewers slam ‘disgustingly one-sided’ doc on the Royals

December 3, 2021

The BBC has hit back after viewers complained about its documentary exploring Prince William and Prince Harry’s relationship with the media.

The two-part series Princes And The Press aired last month and saw Amol Rajan investigate the years leading up to and including the engagement and wedding of Meghan and Harry.

It also delved deep into the illegal activities engaged in by some newspapers in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including hacking and ‘blagging’, and how these techniques were used to target members of the royal family and their associates.

Many viewers blasted the documentary, branding it ‘anti-Meghan media bias’ and ‘disgustingly one-sided’.

Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and Clarence House also released a joint statement following the documentary, which read: ‘A free, responsible and open press is of vital importance to a healthy democracy.

‘However, too often it is overblown and unfounded claims from unnamed sources that are presented as facts and it is disappointing when anyone, including the BBC, gives them credibility.’

The BBC revealed that it received complaints from viewers who believed the programme was disrespectful to the Royal family and therefore should not have been broadcast.

Addressing the complaints, a spokesperson for the corporation said: ‘The Princes and the Press explored the relationship between the media and the monarchy, focusing on the younger royals.

The Royal family should take action over the BBC programme the princes and the press, the journalists interviewed were making degrading remarks about the duchess of Sussex and prince harry.

It would seem that the princes and the press show on #bbc2 is very biased and certainly not about what the title infers, time to switch off after 5-10 mins

#DefundTheBBC thought I’d watch the Princes and the Press. What a disgustingly onesided, dog whistle racism filled program it is. The BBC is no longer fit for purpose

The Princes and the Press on BBC2 is basically about anti-Meghan media bias. (But is also manipulating viewers even while warning against media manipulation).

‘It included interviews with a range of print and broadcast reporters who follow the royals closely and heard their views on the relationship the press has with the royal family and what influences the stories that are published.

‘We conducted more than 80 hours of interviews and sought views from a wide variety of contributors.’

The spokesperson added: ‘This included approaches to Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and Clarence House for comment or for a representative to be interviewed for this series. A joint statement issued by them was included in both programmes.’

The Princes And The Press is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
