Overnight a new Spider-Man villain spin-off movie was announced, Kraven the Hunter. Sony Pictures confirmed the news on their Twitter account, while adding that British star Taylor-Johnson would be taking on the role of the hunter. However, this casting choice has prompted some questions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom, as Taylor-Johnson previously played Pietro Maximoff / Quicksilver in the series.

Taylor-Johnson played the speedster in the 2015 movie Avengers: Age of Ultron.

He appeared alongside his on-screen sister, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen).

Although the film was his debut in the MCU, he was killed off when Ultron shot him.

Since then, Wanda has been mourning the loss of her twin brother – but that could all be about to change.

In the recent Disney Plus series WandaVision, Wanda struggled to deal with the loss of Pietro.

This was such an issue for her that she thought her powers had resurrected him into a new version of the hero, this time played by actor Evan Peters.

Peters played Pietro in Fox’s X-Men universe, making fans believe he had been pulled from another cinematic universe.

However, it was eventually revealed Peters was playing an actor pretending to be Pietro, meaning Wanda’s real brother was still dead.

The news that Taylor-Johnson will be taking on Kraven the Hunter left fans confused, as the villain is traditionally a villain in the Spider-Man mythos.

It could end up that Kraven the Hunter’s movie is a film in a separate universe, similar to another Sony/Marvel entity, Venom & Venom Let There Be Carnage.

But if it isn’t, Taylor-Johnson’s return may be the beginning of the MCU merging with the Sony Marvel universe.

Last year Fox was bought up by Disney, meaning all of the X-Men rights were transferred back to Marvel, allowing them to make films with them once again.

The final moments of WandaVision showed Wanda reading the Darkhold and learning about how to find her long lost children in other universes.

If she finds a different version of her brother – Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter – she may try to collapse the universes and unite them all together as one.

Of course, considering he is a villain and doesn’t have Pietro’s superpowers, she could end up having to fight him going forward.

This return could also spark some issues between Wanda and Spider-Man.

Considering Kraven and Spider-Man are historic enemies, they may come to blows in an upcoming film.

If Wanda had resurrected her brother, she would not want him attacked by Spider-Man, suggesting she might battle it out with the webhead.

Kraven the Hunter is due for release on January 13, 2023.

The Marvel films are available to watch on Disney Plus now.
