Antiques Roadshow expert refuses to value ‘grotesque’ alien figure found in shedAugust 30, 2021
An Antiques Roadshow expert was stunned when he was asked to valuate a mini pottery showing a creature in mother-like figure.
The guest explained the builders unearthed an old coal shed and found the item inside when they were excavating his property.
In the episode played on BBC yesterday, he told specialist Marc Allum: "We found it in 2014.
"We were excavating out the back of our property and when the builders got close to the house, they uncovered what we think is an old coal shed.
"We found what looked like just a strangely shaped pebble just sitting in the rubble.
"[We] picked it up – hey presto, this strange thing, creature, mother – and we've had it ever since and wondered what it is."
The figurine features a large bulging head with odd-looking eyes and in the middle, a baby is seen lying horizontally in the middle.
Marc takes a closer look at the item and frowns: "Well it is a very, very odd little object.
"It's quite grotesque in a way isn't it? And it begs you to start asking questions."
Antiques Roadshow's biggest surprises
He puts on his glasses and immediately identifies the material of the object.
"We can see that there are some fractures within the neck here, which immediately tells me it's not stone," he points it out and shows to the guest.
"It's very hard and quite heavy, and I can tell from that sort of shrinkage crack that this is in fact fired pottery.

"Kind of looks like a forerunner to ET, doesn't it?"
Based on the details and the material, Marc believed it was a fertility figurine made roughly 100 to 150 years old ago.
"In terms of value, I would say it's priceless. But I'll keep my eyes skimmed," Marc added.
"You keep your eyes skimmed, and maybe we'll answer that question one of these days."
