The United States will get a spin-off version of Europe’s hit singing competition Eurovision. While the US has never been able to compete in Eurovision, they are finally getting their own version of the televised contest called the American Song Contest. But, when will the competition air? And how will the contest work? has everything you need to know.

When and where will the American Song Contest air?

Eurovision recently announced the news of a US-based spin-off, the American Song Contest, revealing that the competition will kick off next year.

An official air date for The American Song Contest is yet to be announced, but it has been confirmed it will be broadcast on NBC.

NBC announced during its 2021-2022 upfronts that the singing competition would be held for midseason at some point in 2022.

How will the competition work?

The American Song Contest will see performers from all 50 states, as well as five US territories and Washington, DC, compete for the title of Best Original Song.

The competition will consist of a series of qualifying rounds, semi-finals and an ultimate Grand Final.

A solo artist, duo, DJ or band will be chosen to represent each US territory, with just one emerging victorious at the end of the process.

In a statement, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest Martin Österdahl said: “For 65 years the Eurovision Song Contest has connected people far and wide.

“As owners of this hugely successful format, we have seen how it has found a place in millions of hearts across Europe and beyond.

“Now we are excited to have found the perfect partners to share this unique competition and its passionate celebration of music and original songs with the American people,” he concluded.

How can people enter the competition?

Applications will soon be open and hopeful contestants can sign up for the show.

Anyone from the 50 states, Washington DC and territories American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands is allowed to apply.

When is Eurovision this year?

The Eurovision Song Contest, which turns 65 this year, is already underway, with the final taking place on May 22nd.

Dutch city Rotterdam was due to host the worldwide event last year but because of the coronavirus pandemic, the annual competition was cancelled.

Representing the UK in the contest this year is singer-songwriter James Newman.

In 2013, James won a Brit Award for co-writing the British Single of the Year Waiting All Night, performed by Rudimental and Ella Eyre.

James, who is originally from Yorkshire, has also been nominated for a Grammy twice, for co-writing Coping from Toni Braxton’s album Sex & Cigarettes and Let ‘Em Talk from Kesha’s album Rainbow.

James was originally meant to be performing as the UK’s entry in 2020, before the competition was cancelled.

Instead, he will be competing this year and performing his new song Embers in Rotterdam later this month.

While speaking to Radio 1 Newsbeat, James said: “Embers is about those sparks that don’t die out.”

The American Song Contest will air in 2022 on NBC. The Eurovision Song contest 2021 will air on the BBC this May.
