Ackley Bridge season 3: Why did Missy actress Poppy Lee Friar leave Ackley Bridge?

July 2, 2019

Missy Booth (played by Poppy Lee Friar) came to a sad end on Ackley Bridge season three last week on Channel 4 when she died after a car crash. Ackley Bridge viewers were left wondering why Poppy Lee Friar was leaving Ackley Bridge after the surprise death. Poppy Lee Friar has hinted in interviews about why she decided to leave the series.

Why did Poppy Lee Friar leave Ackley Bridge?

Although the exact reason why Booth decided to leave Ackley Bridge has not been announced, it seems like the show’s way of bringing to a close the story of the friendship of main characters Missy Booth and Nas Paracha (Amy-Leigh Hickman).

With Nas likely moving to Oxford this year to go to university, the show was always going to lose its central friendship.

However, with Missy dead, Nas has nothing holding her back from her dreams, with her best friend’s death a stark reminder that she needs to live every day to its fullest.

This was first hinted to in a pre-show interview Friar gave with Channel 4.

WHO IS IN THE CAST OF ACKLEY BRIDGE?

In this interview, she said: “Nas is potentially going to Oxford which really excites Missy.

“However, as time goes by, it dawns on her that she may be left behind which is distressing and sad.

“She has so much potential, but her grades and lack of direction might mean that she will feel trapped in a life she does not want.

“It frightens her and makes her feel angry towards Nas for her lack of understanding and empathy.”

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE END OF ACKLEY BRIDGE SEASON 2?

Friar also seemed to allude to this when she told Radio Times: “We’d come full circle and it is iconic of their friendship so it has so much meaning.”

Although killing off Missy seems like an extreme way to end this storyline, it does tie things up.

Following the release of Friar’s last-ever episode of Ackley Bridge season three, she gave an interview with Radio Times talking about leaving the show.

She said: “It’s always sad saying goodbye to a character you’ve played but they always stay in your heart, so Missy is alive forever within me. I adored playing her.

HOW MANY EPISODES IN ACKLEY BRIDGE SEASON 3?

Hickman, meanwhile, said of her final scenes with Friar: “It was hard having to film those scenes because Poppy really was leaving the show

“It felt a little close to the bone because it really was the end of Missy and Nas!

“Therefore, there was a lot of truth within what we were producing as we knew how much we really were going to miss each other.”

Friar’s IMDB page currently does not feature any upcoming projects, though she is sure to appear back on screens soon.
