This is quite the birthday present for Gary Sanchez.
The Yankees tendered Sanchez on Wednesday, opting to retain the catcher despite his struggles during the 2020 season.
The decision will keep Sanchez, who turned 28 Wednesday, around for his seventh season in the Bronx.
There was speculation the Yankees might move on from Sanchez after he posted a career-low .147 batting average and was benched during the postseason. He also tied for the American League with five passed balls, having led the league with 16 in 2017 and 18 in 2017.
But now Sanchez is expected to receive a slight raise from the $5 million he would have been due last season, had it not been cut short.
The Yankees don’t have much depth behind the plate, with Kyle Higashioka also on the roster, so keeping Sanchez made sense in that regard.
Sanchez is a two-time All-Star, most recently in 2019 when he hit 34 home runs.
