Wright ‘scared’ of facing van Gerwen as world No1 pulls out of match

March 13, 2022

World No. 1 Peter Wright has been accused by a number of darts fans of running ‘scared’ from three-time world champion Michael Van Gerwen, after pulling out of his match with the Dutchman this weekend.

Wright was scheduled to take on rival Van Gerwen at the Interwetten German Darts Championship, however the PDC announced the Scot had withdrawn with a back injury.

Some fans however believe the injury card was just a bluff from the reigning world champion, instead insinuating that Wright was scared of taking on MVG.

Following the PDC’s announcement one Twitter user simply replied: “He’s scared.”

These thoughts were echoed by other online darts fans, as another tweeted: “Running scared of Mighty Mike he truly is back,” whilst a fellow user added: “Clearly scared of MVG.”

Despite the claims, a number of Wright’s fans jumped to his defence and rubbished any idea of the Snakebite running scared.

As a result, the Scot has enjoyed some success over the former world No. 1 in recent times winning three of their last five meetings at the oche, despite losing the last two.

One of those victories that stands out in particular is Wright’s hard-fought World Matchplay semi-final victory over MVG last summer, which sent him on his way to his maiden Matchplay title.

And this crushing win was used as an example by many of his fans in defence withdrawal.

Responding to one of the many ‘scared’ claims, one social media user sarcastically responded: “Much like in the worlds, matchplay and Players championship.”

Another Twitter user also backed the injured Wright, adding: “‘Scared’ haha he’s the world number 1 and world champion, what’s he got the be scared of.”

Wright had booked himself a spot in the last eight, after defeating world No. 13 Krzystof Ratajski 6-4 in the last 16.
