World champion Smith ‘gutted’ as ‘best mate’ is snubbed for Premier League darts
January 31, 2023Joe Cullen has received a message of support from world champion Michael Smith following his Premier League snub.
Cullen, who missed a dart against Michael van Gerwen to win the 2022 tournament, was among the high-profile omissions as the PDC finally unveiled the eight players who will be taking part in this year’s darting roadshow.
Jonny Clayton, Dimitri Van den Bergh, Nathan Aspinall and recently-crowned Masters champion Chris Dobey have joined the world’s top four of Smith, Van Gerwen, Peter Wright and Gerwyn Price in the line-up.

Controversially, world number five Luke Humphries, as well as the likes of Cullen, Ross Smith, Danny Noppert and Dirk van Duijvenbode, have missed out.
Cullen has not hidden his disappointment, tweeting: “Gutted with my omission from the Premier League! Don't feel it's justified at all if I'm honest…. In fact it's a kick in the balls! But I’m certainly not the only player who rightly feels hard done by! Felt I deserved another chance after been 1mm from winning – been a tough day!!”
And he has received high-level support with pal Smith, who beat Cullen on the way to glory at Alexandra Palace over Christmas. Bully Boy replied to the message, saying: “Gutted for you mate. Wanted my best mate with me.”

Smith’s message went down well with fans, with one replying: “100% here for this bromance!” Another said: “PDC got it totally wrong this year.”
A third fan fumed: “Don't understand it myself, just a farce the whole thing.” Another urged Smith: “Win it for him Michael.”
On a similar theme, one fan commented: “My money is on you Bully boy. Step up. No pressure.”
