Why Phil Foden not playing for England against Italy in Euro 2020 final?July 11, 2021
ENGLAND have had one of the strongest squads throughout the whole of this summer's Euro 2020 tournament.
Phil Foden has shone as one of England's young star players, starting the Three Lions first two games and coming on in extra-time against Denmark in the semi-final.
But Foden isn't expected to play in England's historic final clash against Italy at Wembley Stadium tonight.
The Manchester City forward is, however, still hopeful he can pass a late fitness test.
Why is Phil Foden not playing against Italy?
Phil Foden will be hoping he can play some part in tonight's final against Italy, but it's looking unlikely.
The forward has a foot injury, according to England boss Gareth Southgate, who says he hopes it'll clear up in time for the game.
"He's got a fairly minor foot injury," said Southgate.
"But it's just whether it's going to be one that clears up in time for him to be able to take part in the game, so we'll have to assess that again later.
We've been on the bus for the last couple of hours so the medical team will give us an update later.
"He's definitely doubtful although it's not something serious.
"It's just whether it will keep him out of this particular game."
Foden missed England's last training session at St George's Park on Saturday as a precaution.
The rest of the squad are fit and ready to play, with all 26 players passing their mandated PCR coronavirus tests.
Foden, 21, replaced Mason Mount in extra-time of England's crucial win over Denmark in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
He was brilliant last season for Man City, scoring 16 times and assisting on 10 occasions for Pep Guardiola's side.
Foden then made his England debut against Iceland in the UEFA Nations League.
