But who is the Dutch star who has enjoyed a sharp rise in singles over the past two and a half years.


Who is Kiki Bertens?

The Breda native was born December 10, 1991 – making her 26-years-old.

Despite not playing on the junior circuit, Bertens won her first WTA title at the Morocco Open in 2012.

Yet, she was typically a doubles player in formative years, partnering Sweden's Johanna Larsson.

The pair have won ten titles together and reached the WTA Finals last year, losing in the final.

However, Bertens has progressed quickly over the past two seasons, winning five tournaments, including beating world number one Simona Halep at the Cincinnati Open in August.

The Duch star's triumphs coincided with a rise up the ranks, having been seeded for the first time at a Grand Slam in 2016 – at Wimbledon.

Bertens broke into the top 20 at the start of 2017, before becoming the first Dutch women to reach number ten in the world since Brenda Schultz-McCarthy did 22 years ago.

Does Kiki Bertens have a boyfriend?

Bertens' newfound fame and success has been keeping her pretty busy with her win over Halep in August taking her further into the spotlight.

In an interview with WTA following her Cincinnati win, the Dutch star revealed that she has a boyfriend – but not his name.

The couple share photos together on social media, but has remained tight-lipped on his name.

How did Kiki Bertens reach the WTA Finals?

While Bertens has certainly earned her place in Singapore, she has been fortunate.

World number one Simona Halep was forced to withdraw from the tournament as she continues to recover from an ongoing back injury.

As the next in line in the Porsche Race rankings, Bertens takes the Romanian's spot.

She will be competing for the £1.4m prize on offer to the winner.
