Washington Redskins to retire nickname many consider racistJuly 13, 2020
The Washington Redskins nickname will soon be no more.
Only after facing mounting financial pressure from sponsors, the Redskins on Monday are expected to retire the nickname many consider to be racist, according to Sports Business Daily.
The new nickname will not be announced yet due to a pending trademark, the report said.
Native American groups and others have called on Dan Snyder to change the name for years, but the team’s owner stood his ground. Recent social-justice protests across the country, however, led to FedEx, the team’s main stadium sponsor, to request the team to get rid of the name.
