Three keys to keeping banned coaches banned and children safe

Despite the U.S. Olympic Committee’s reluctance and the national governing bodies’ incapabilities, child protection experts say there are ways to close the gaps and keep young athletes safer.

1. Create a universal banned list. Since June, the USOC has been working with the governing bodies to incorporate all individuals banned for sexual misconduct into one database on SafeSport’s website. Experts say this is a big step forward, especially if the database includes as much information as possible.

Publishing and increasing awareness of a universal list would make it a valuable resource for other sports organizations, schools or youth organizations, such as the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts.
