Donnie Stevenson wasn’t an imaginary hitting coaching after all. He was an actual person. Mets fans are probably familiar with him.
His name is Pete Alonso.
According to The Athletic, Alonso dressed up as a new hitting coach prior to the team’s May 1 win over the Phillies and former teammate Zack Wheeler in Philadelphia.
Alonso, dressed in a hat and sunglasses, attended the hitters’ meeting as a joke, and told his teammates to stop over-thinking.
They scored four runs off Wheeler that day. After the win, Alonso went on about Stevenson.
“Donnie’s been great helping the team,” Alonso said. “Donnie really helped us today.”
Since that game, the Mets have won seven of their last nine contests to vault to the top spot in the NL East.
Since the firing of hitting coach Chili Davis, though, nobody has heard from Stevenson.
