Royal Ascot 2019: Daahyeh fights on gamely to land Albany for Roger Varian

June 21, 2019

PUNTERS were in raptures as hot favourite Daahyeh landed the odds in the opener for trainer Roger Varian.

The star filly was headed inside the final furlong but fought back bravely under a power-packed drive from David Egan.

Backed into 4-1 before the off, the daughter of Bated Breath confirmed the strong form-line of her debut, coming with a rattle to see off the challenge of 25-1 shot Celtic Beauty.

At one stage she looked as though she may fall in a hole, but she battled on gamely and in the end drew away for a comprehensive victory.

The near-side did best once again as those on the other side of the course could only play catch-up, with Brian Meehan's Aroha (100-1) doing best in third.

Winning jockey David Egan said: "She is very talented.

"She won very impressively at Newmarket as we all know and she came here as one of the fancies.

"For someone as young as myself to ride one fancied at Royal Ascot is a big deal.

"I'm just thankful to the owners for their loyalty."
