Report: Suns owner threatens to move team to Seattle or Vegas

The Phoenix Suns have been considered one of the NBA’s worst-run franchises since Robert Sarver purchased the team in 2004. His track record of cost-cutting moves and questionable hires dropped the Suns from a West contender to a perpetual bottom dweller.

Still, he wants a newly renovated arena. And he wants public money to fund a majority of the project. He’s apparently threatening to move the Suns out of Phoenix if he doesn’t get his way.

Sources tell me City Manager Ed Zuercher is hoping the City Council will agree to postpone the vote, rather than potentially suffering a lopsided defeat that could kill future prospects for a deal.

Meanwhile, Sarver is telling city officials that he may take the team to Seattle or Las Vegas, one source told me.

As of Wednesday, the city council vote for a $230 million renovation of the 26-year-old Talking Stick Resort Arena hit a snag. The arena deal already had three “no” confirmed votes – one more dissenting vote would kill the project. The mayor planned to ask for a delay in the vote, aiming at Jan. 23.
