Punters were busy piling onto the Charlie Appleby pair of Adayar and Hurricane Lane – but there was a shock in store with 80-1 Torquator Tasso stealing the show.

Dermot Weld's superstar Tarnawa came second, with St Leger winner Hurricane Lane in third.

This was an amazing win for jockey René Piechulek, who was racing in his first Arc and has just 25 Twitter followers.

Odds aside, it was also a remarkable victory for trainer Marcel Weiss, who is in only his second year with a licence.

Incredibly, Torquator Tasso, from Germany, had a Betfair SP of 139-1. Well done if you were on.
