So you’re saying there’s a chance?
John McClain, who has covered the NFL at the Houston Chronicle for more than 45 years, said on SportsRadio 610 in Houston that the Texans remain firm behind the scenes in their public stance about not trading quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Unless the Jets convince them otherwise. There is a caveat that will have New York – and the rest of the AFC East – buzzing.
“Anybody who says [the Texans] called the Eagles, not true,” McClain said. “If they traded him, it would be the Jets. No, they have not contacted anyone about trading Watson.”
McClain previously suggested the Texans’ asking price would start at two first-round picks, two second-round picks and two young defensive starters.
“They don’t call teams. Teams call them,” McClain said. “They told everybody they are not trading Watson. Doesn’t mean they won’t do it eventually, but I guarantee you if they did it, [it] would not be for Carson Wentz and the Eagles.”
Watson has a no-trade clause, so if the Texans decide to trade him, he could have influence on that destination.
If a much-speculated swap of one disgruntled quarterback for another disgruntled quarterback is off the table, then it leaves the Jets, Dolphins, Panthers, Bears, 49ers and Washington as the teams most likely vying for Watson’s services.
The Colts appear to be the favorite to land Wentz if he is traded. Indianapolis would be an unlikely destination for Watson, as they are division rivals with the Texans.
